Trustwave, a leading provider of information security and compliance management solutions to businesses and organizations throughout the world, has been a part of the City Scholars program since its inception in 2017. The company sees it as an important part of its strategy to recruit from the University of Illinois.
“The University of Illinois is always one of our core schools, and City Scholars gives us a first touch at some top talent. From that standpoint, it is a valuable asset to our recruiting platform.” – Krista Burdinie, Corprate Talent Acquisition Specialist
“We’re hoping to keep tech talent here in Chicago to grow with us through many years,” said Krista Burdinie, Corporate Talent Acquisition Specialist at Trustwave. “The University of Illinois is always one of our core schools, and City Scholars gives us a first touch at some top talent. From that standpoint, it is a valuable asset to our recruiting platform.”
Trustwave has employed from 8-12 interns each semester, working in teams, utilizing their skills to research and implement new application programming interfaces (APIs) into its framework, creating test cases to look into future technology, and helping identify and address important security concerns.
A big takeaway from Trustwave’s participation in the City Scholars program, according to Burdinie, is the caliber of students, noting their ability to not only learn, but also be a valuable asset to the teams they are working with.
“Across the board we’ve seen some extremely bright students,” she said. “They have been eager to learn and get their hands in as many areas as possible. The developers are impressed with their programming knowledge coming in the door.”
Burdinie also indicated that City Scholars gives Trustwave an opportunity to engage with students at a different time of the year besides the summer.
“That played a big part into us ultimately making a decision to get involved (with City Scholars),” Burdinie said. “Because they are going to school at the same time, they are able to apply concepts that they are learning in real time within our organization. They have the opportunity to step away, learn new items, and bring that knowledge back to us. That has been really valuable.”
Trustwave has seen City Scholars extending their stay with the company through summer internships and ultimately full-time employment, which is one of the goals of the partnership from the corporate perspective.
“We’ve had interns that weren’t necessarily looking for something that summer, but had advisors indicate to us from about day 10 that they believe they could be a key asset for us,” Burdinie said. “’Let’s lock them in.’”
